Instructions for making a Rag Quilt

Rag Quilt Instructions
1. Prewash all flannel fabrics.
2. If back squares will all be the same, layer fabric with flannel before cutting into squares. (can cut any size square you like, I prefer not bigger than 9” and not smaller than 6”)-cut all fabric into squares. Always cut starting at selvage edge-sometimes you can get another block out of the folded side.
3. Lay squares out and design your quilt.
(Optional: sew an X on each square)
4. Start sewing one row at a time, back sides together, leaving a large seam allowance (5/8 to 1”) on the front side. Sew all rows together to form quilt.
5. Sew around the outside edge of quilt 1” in. I like to do 2 rows.
6. Clip the seams and edges about every ¼”, making sure not to cut through the seam. After you have finished clipping quilt, turn over and pull from both sides to check for holes.
7. Wash in cool water. Shake quilt outside. Dry in dryer. (Make sure lint catcher is clean first) Shake outside. I use packing tape to get the rest of the fuzzies off. The quilt will shed for a couple more washings, but gets softer and fuzzier each time.
